A Proud Moment for tamil Literature

Renowned poet and lyricist vairamuthu has been selected for the prestigious Jnanpith Award, one of the highest honors in the field of literature in India. Literary circles across the country have been celebrating the recognition, describing it as a significant achievement for tamil literature after nearly a quarter of a century.

Many leaders from various fields have extended their congratulations to the celebrated poet for this remarkable accomplishment.

Third tamil Writer to Receive the Honour

In the history of tamil literature, only two writers had previously received the Jnanpith Award:

  • Akilan in 1975
  • Jayakanthan in 2002

Now, vairamuthu has become the third literary figure from tamil Nadu to receive this prestigious award, bringing great pride to the state.

Chief minister stalin Meets the Poet

Following the announcement, the chief minister of tamil Nadu, M. K. stalin, personally met vairamuthu at his residence in Chennai.

During the meeting, stalin honored the poet by presenting him with a shawl (ponnadai) and congratulated him for receiving the Jnanpith Award. The gesture highlighted the state government’s appreciation for the poet’s contributions to tamil language and literature.

Vairamuthu Shares Emotional Message

After the meeting, vairamuthu shared a heartfelt post on the social media platform X describing the Chief Minister’s visit.

In his message, he praised Stalin’s simplicity and warmth, noting that the chief minister arrived without the usual political formality. vairamuthu wrote that stalin visited him like a brother and a contemporary friend, creating a pleasant and memorable moment.

He also mentioned that the chief minister spoke with him about the history and significance of the Jnanpith Award, expressing genuine interest in the literary honour.

A Memorable Visit

Vairamuthu described the interaction poetically, saying the Chief Minister’s visit brought renewed energy and encouragement. After stalin departed, the poet remarked that his home felt suddenly quiet, comparing it to a street that becomes empty after an elephant passes through it.
