They worked together for just six years. But it must be said that in those 6 years, these two have run a musical kingdom together. It was bharathiraja who introduced vairamuthu to Ilayaraja. vairamuthu made his debut as a lyricist with the 1980 film Nizhalgal under his direction. When ilayaraja asked if he would write a song for the film while composing the film, he said that he would try, and vairamuthu raised an eyebrow when he heard that he should write the lyrics or sing them as a song. After six years of working together in many films, the friendship between the two started to crack at some point. It is said that the two argued at times saying that vairamuthu was not given the songs on time due to a flood of film opportunities.
They say that ilayaraja changed the lyrics written by vairamuthu in some films including sindhu Bhairavi and laid the foundation for their division. Later, Ilayaraja's intervention in Vairamuthu's songs increased and finally, it erupted into a conflict during the song recording of the music film Thenal. vairamuthu had written the lyrics for the song 'Enthan Kaikutayai Yaar Eduthadhu' and showed it to ilayaraja, saying that he did not like it and that he was going to write himself. Angered by this, vairamuthu left the place.The two never worked together after that. Many leading celebrities also tried to reconcile but the two did not heed. Then vairamuthu regained his lost position by traveling with AR rahman to increase his dominance in Kollywood. Vairamuthu's determination to end years of division was evident in his many platform speeches. However, it is said that it did not happen due to Ilayaraja's stubbornness. For example, Vairamuthu, who had been writing songs for Seenu Ramasamy's films, was also writing songs for Mamanithan directed by him. The film was composed by Yuvan and Ilayaraja. As vairamuthu has written many songs in Yuvan's music, he has given the green signal for vairamuthu to work in Mamanithan. But ilayaraja did not agree. So this attempt to connect the two also failed. Apart from this, musicians ilayaraja and vairamuthu were special guests at the appreciation function held for P Susila. ilayaraja, who was the first to speak on stage, while talking about lyricists, indirectly attacked vairamuthu saying that there is no better lyricist than Kaviarasar Kannadasan. vairamuthu came to speak after this. There is no doubt that Kavyarasar Kannadasan is a great lyricist. But he retorted furiously that there was no better music composer than MS Viswanathan.
