The Center on thursday (August 10) introduced a bill in the rajya sabha regarding the selection of the Chief election Commissioner and election Commissioners. According to the bill, in future the Chief election Commissioner and election Commissioners will be appointed by a three-member committee headed by the Prime Minister. The leader of the Opposition in the lok sabha and a cabinet minister will also be members of the committee.
The bill comes months after the supreme court ordered in march that the Prime minister, leader of the Opposition in the lok sabha and These election officers will be appointed by the President on the advice of a committee consisting of the Chief Justice.

The Bill seeks to replace the Chief Justice of india with a cabinet minister in the panel for selection of the Chief election Commissioner and election Commissioners, allowing the government to exercise greater control over the appointments of poll panel members.Law minister Arjun ram Meghwal introduced the Chief election Commissioner and Other election Commissioners (Appointment, service Conditions and Tenure of Office) Bill, 2023 in the Rajya Sabha. The Chairman, the leader of the Opposition and a Union cabinet minister, to be nominated by the Prime minister, select the CEC and EC. If there is no leader of the opposition in the lok sabha, then the leader of the largest party in the opposition in the house will be considered as the leader of the opposition.
