A new turn came in the relations between
india and
maldives when
maldives President Mohammad Muizzu called
india his closest partner country after the visit of
prime minister Narendra Modi. Muizzu, who once came to power with slogans like 'India Out', is now appreciating the cooperation received from India. During PM Modi's historic visit,
india announced to give a new credit line (financial assistance) of Rs 5,000 crore to
maldives, which President Muizzu has described as very important for the development of Maldives.
What did President Muizzu say about the relationship with India?
In a conversation with News18, President Muizzu said that
maldives is now moving towards completing the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India. He said that when this agreement is done, the traders of both the countries will get a big benefit.
maldives will use the assistance of Rs 5,000 crore received from
india to develop hospitals, houses, schools and other infrastructure.
Muizzu said, "We have decided on many important projects for this. This help is very important for us." Thanking PM Modi, he said, "We are very grateful for this visit of the Prime Minister."
Muizzu came to power in 2023
It is worth noting that when Muizzu came to power in 2023, his attitude towards
india was very tough and the 'India Out' campaign was run. In 2024, some of his ministers also made sharp comments on India. Muizzu had earlier visited
turkey and China, while according to
tradition the President of
maldives used to come to
india first, but the visit of Foreign
minister S.
jaishankar and Muizzu's visit to
india proved helpful in bringing the relations between the two countries back on track.
