Chennai, Nov 19, 2025tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. Stalin has strongly criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) central government for its decision to reject the proposed metro rail projects in coimbatore and Madurai, calling it a setback to urban development and public welfare.

In a statement issued today, stalin said that urban mass transport systems like metro rails are crucial for the future growth of tier-2 cities like coimbatore and Madurai. He accused the central government of showing disinterest in regional development, despite repeated requests from the state administration.

“The rejection of metro rail projects for coimbatore and madurai is a disappointing and regressive decision. It reflects a lack of vision and understanding of the needs of tamil Nadu’s urban population,”
M.K. Stalin

Metro Projects and Their Significance

· Coimbatore Metro: Planned to reduce traffic congestion and provide faster connectivity across the city’s key residential, industrial, and commercial hubs.

· Madurai Metro: Designed to modernize urban mobility, promote tourism, and provide efficient transport for daily commuters.

Stalin emphasized that these metro projects are not just about convenience but also about employment generation, sustainable urban planning, and economic growth. Rejecting them, he argued, hurts both citizens and the state economy.

Political Context

· The TN chief minister accused the bjp government of bias towards certain states and ignoring genuine development needs of tamil Nadu.

· He claimed that the state government had submitted all necessary proposals, feasibility studies, and budget plans to ensure smooth implementation, but they were dismissed without adequate justification.

· stalin reiterated that his administration remains committed to bringing world-class urban infrastructure to tamil Nadu, and expressed hope that the central government will reconsider the decision under public pressure.

Public Reaction

Urban development experts and city residents have also expressed disappointment over the rejection, citing:

· Increasing traffic and pollution in both cities

· The need for modern, sustainable public transport

· Economic advantages of metro projects in boosting local businesses and tourism

Stalin’s Next Steps

The chief minister has called for:

1. Dialogue with central authorities to revisit the metro proposals

2. Accelerated state-level plans for public transport modernization, including bus rapid transit systems as an interim solution

3. Continuous public advocacy to ensure that regional urban infrastructure projects receive the attention and funding they deserve
