Here's how.
Be Flexible & Make Your Reservations Early
Some trains still have seats available up to two days before the trip, particularly if your travel dates and train preferences are flexible. Use IRCTC's "Flexible Dates" feature to look into other options and check availability at various times of the day.
Choose Premium Trains or Higher Classes
There are typically more AC classes available on trains like the Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto. If you have the extra money, choose 2AC or 3AC; these courses are more likely to be filled than Sleeper or General classes.
Smart Hack: Change Your Boarding Station
Booking from a station along the route rather than your actual departure point will occasionally open up availability. Later, you can use irctc to switch your boarding station, allowing you to board from the station of your choice and benefit from more available seats.
Use the "Vikalp" Option
Passengers having waitlisted tickets can be immediately transferred to a different train with available seats—at no additional cost—under IRCTC's Vikalp service. This is particularly helpful when making reservations near the trip date.
Reservation Chart Insights
Usually, four hours before train departure, final reservation charts are created. Canceled seats frequently become available for last-minute reservations following chart preparation. For real-time information, check the station counters or IRCTC.
Check for Special Quotas
Sometimes, seats are set aside under the Divyangjan, Ladies, Premium Tatkal, or Defense quotas. Your chances of receiving a confirmed ticket without depending on ordinary Tatkal enhance if you qualify under any of them.
Offline Booking still works
The railway reservation counter should not be disregarded. Even when the online portal indicates that there are no seats available, some quotas that are reserved offline may still have seats. The day can be saved with a short trip to the counter.
