China and russia have started a joint marine expedition again after about 5 years. The new expedition, which departed from Vladivostok port, is being led by the research vessel 'Academic M.A. Lavrentyev'. The team of 25 scientists involved in it will study the environment, ecology and climate in the deep sea for about 45 days. During this time, both the countries will make many discoveries in the Arctic region.
This mission is the first major marine mission between the two countries after COVID-19 and it is being operated by FIO (First Institute of Oceanography) under the Ministry of Natural Resources of China. According to government claims, the purpose of this expedition is to understand the deep marine eco-system. To study the effects of climate change. To collect data for conservation of marine resources and prediction of natural disasters, but in the eyes of experts, this expedition is not so simple. Many experts believe that the real motive of china and russia is to discover rare minerals and natural resources and gain control over the Northern sea Route. This will help in establishing dominance in future global trade routes.
Which areas are at the center of the search?
This time the main area of the mission includes the Bering sea and the North-Western Pacific Ocean. This area is considered geologically rich and manganese nodules, cobalt and rare earth metals are found on the sea floor here. Along with this, scientists will also try to know what this area has experienced from climate change in the last 1.26 lakh years.
Growing China-Russia maritime cooperation
This is not the first time the two countries have partnered on marine science, as follows:
2009: Joint maritime mission in Qingdao, China
2017: Establishment of Joint Oceanographic Research Center
2023: Formation of special sub-committee for cooperation on the Northern sea Route
The Northern sea Route, which stretches 5,600 kilometers from Russia's Arctic coast, could become a future global market hotspot. Due to climate change, the Arctic ice is melting rapidly, making this route shorter and cheaper than the traditional Suez Canal. china and russia are trying to end Western dependence on this route and make their respective trade routes independent and safe. Because of this, America seems to be in tension.
