Indians work a lot more than anybody anywhere else in the world, yet their pay is disproportionately poor, meaning that there is a negative correlation between their labor and compensation. Research that examined the employment-related policies of the BJP-led government during the last ten years states that the nation's wage growth has been quite little. According to the survey, during the past ten years, there has been a notable increase in the number of self-employed persons in the nation.

Many families in the nation are reportedly still unemployed, which keeps them from having access to essentials. These families' low or nonexistent income makes it impossible for them to live even a minimally pleasant existence. There is also a great deal of salary disparity. The wealthiest 10% and 1% of the population in the nation, respectively, hold 22% and 57% of the nation's total wealth. Conversely, just 12% belong to the lowest 50% of the population. The wealthiest 10% of the population will have 64.5% of the country's overall wealth as of 2022. However, just 6.1% are owned by the lowest 50% of people.

Furthermore, throughout the past five years, there hasn't been any discernible increase in the average person's salary. In 19 of the 34 states and Union Territories, the average income of an individual in 2022–2023 is less than Rs. 375 per day and Rs. 3050 per week. Based on the data, experts concluded that unless appropriate action is done, the unemployment rate and pay gap will continue to rise annually.
