There is no tax on 14 items..!? But there is a condition..?

Union Finance minister nirmala sitharaman on tuesday released a list of goods that are not subject to GST, are sold loosely and are not free-packed or pre-labeled. The 47th GST Council was adjourned in its meeting today as opposition members took action over the levy of GST on some new goods and the issue of price hikes. Union Finance minister nirmala sitharaman has explained the imposition of tax on 14 products on twitter today.
Nirmala Sitharaman said that the 5% GST on food items like cereals, rice, flour, and curd is limited to pre-packaged and labeled items. She said it was a unanimous decision of the GST Council last month, in which even non-BJP members ruled. Similarly, 14 items including pulses, wheat, oats, maize, rice, wheat flour and maida, suji/Rava, chickpea flour, fries, and curd/lassi are sold loose and not pre-packaged or pre-labeled. nirmala sitharaman said that there is no GST tax.With this, all these 14 products purchased at retail in tamil Nadu, i.e. without package, are exempt from 5% GST. This 5 percent levy was a unanimous decision of the GST Council.
All states attended the GST Council meeting and gave their approval when the Council of Ministers presented the matter of tax rate change in its 47th meeting held at chandigarh on june 28, 2022.This tax hike decision is very necessary to prevent tax leakage. It was considered at various levels, including the Committee of Officials and Ministers, and finally recommended by the GST Council with the complete consensus of all members.
