Parliament has two houses, one is lok sabha and the other is Rajya Sabha. lok sabha is the lower house, whose MPs are directly elected by the people. The other is rajya sabha which is the upper house. Its members are elected by the representatives elected by the people i.e. MLAs. Recently, President draupadi murmu has nominated four MPs for Rajya Sabha. Out of which, a reputed lawyer, social worker and educationist, historian and another educationist have been selected for the upper house Rajya Sabha. This notification was issued by the home Ministry yesterday. Although rajya sabha elections are held every two years. Who are rajya sabha MPs?
Rajya Sabha MPs are members of the upper house of the country. Members of the Legislative assembly of the states elect them. These MPs represent the state in Parliament. They are not directly elected by the people, but the method of their selection is very different from that of lok sabha MPs. They do not have any area, but they are representatives of the state instead of any area. rajya sabha MPs can get work done anywhere in the state from which they are elected.
Works of rajya sabha MP
Rajya Sabha mp has some major works, such as making laws, keeping an eye on the government, representing the states and discussing money bills. Legislative work in which rajya sabha participates in the law making process and ensures that the law is made according to the Constitution and is beneficial for the country. rajya sabha also monitors that the government discharges its duties properly. Apart from this, they represent the states and union territories. rajya sabha can make recommendations on the money bills that are introduced in the Lok Sabha. lok sabha can accept or reject this recommendation. Apart from this, they also discuss the financial budget and five-year plans.
How different is the election?
Every two years, the term of one-third of the MPs in rajya sabha ends and re-elections are held to fill those seats. In the year 2020, elections were held on 55 seats. MLAs participate in the rajya sabha elections. MLCs i.e. Legislative Council members do not participate in it. It is a game of first choice. MLAs do vote for it, but not for all the seats. The vote of every mla is counted only once, so they cannot vote for every seat. In such a situation, they have to vote on the basis of priority. They have to tell who is their first choice and who is the second. The one who gets more votes of the first choice will win the election.
