World heritage Day: Why is a place declared a heritage?

The heritage of a country is its identity. For example, whenever india is mentioned in the world, the image of the taj mahal comes first, later other heritages come. people come from all over the world to see all the heritages present in the world. In such a situation, it is the job of the institutions to preserve them and make people aware of the historical sites. This is the reason why World heritage Day is celebrated every year on 18 April. In the year 1982, a proposal was made to celebrate this day at the global level, but in 1983 it was officially recognized to be celebrated.

How many heritages are in which country?

There are a total of 1199 world heritage sites around the world. Out of these, 933 are cultural sites and 227 are natural sites as well as 39 mixed sites. Apart from this, about 56 also come in the list of danger. italy tops the list of places with the most heritage sites. After this comes China, where there are 56 heritage sites, then Germany, where there are 51 heritage sites. After this, france has 49 heritage sites, spain has 49 and india comes sixth in this matter, where 42 heritage sites have been preserved.

Why and how are heritage sites chosen??

The purpose of converting a place into a heritage is due to its historical and cultural importance. For this, the international Council on Monuments and Sites and the World Conservation Union evaluate it. After investigation, a recommendation is made to the World heritage Committee to include it in the heritage list. Once a year, this committee meets and decides which places are to be included in the heritage or not. heritage sites can include lakes, monuments, deserts, cities, islands, historical buildings, forests, etc. The purpose of including it in the heritage is to preserve that place and save its existence.
