World heritage Day: Why is a place declared a heritage?
The heritage of a country is its identity. There are a total of 1199 world heritage sites around the world. Out of these, 933 are cultural sites and 227 are natural sites as well as 39 mixed sites. Why and how are heritage sites chosen??
The purpose of converting a place into a heritage is due to its historical and cultural importance. For this, the international Council on Monuments and Sites and the World Conservation Union evaluate it. After investigation, a recommendation is made to the World heritage Committee to include it in the heritage list. Once a year, this committee meets and decides which places are to be included in the heritage or not. heritage sites can include lakes, monuments, deserts, cities, islands, historical buildings, forests, etc. The purpose of including it in the heritage is to preserve that place and save its existence.
