In today's world, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has given a new shape to technological development globally. On the one hand, while Western companies (Open AI and Chat GPTs) are strengthening their hold worldwide in the field of AI, on the other hand, indian companies are also trying to make a special place for themselves. This change is important not only from a business point of view, but also from the point of view of national self-reliance and technological empowerment.
Indian companies have joined a new race at this time and that is the race to build local AI models. It is being seen not only as a technical competition but also as a national strategy. In fact, on march 6, the india AI Mission of the Ministry of Electronics and Information technology launched AI Kosha, which is a national data set platform.
India AI Mission, India's big step
The government of india launched an ambitious mission in 2023, known as the india AI Mission. The main objective of this mission was 'to build AI in india and make AI work for India.' Under this mission, the government has taken several initiatives, the major initiatives of which include 'AI Kosha' and 'Common Compute Portal'.
AI Kosha is a national data platform designed to collect non-personal data from different ministries and departments for the creation of AI models and tools. Most AI models in india are based on data and context from Western countries, which do not match the indian context and languages. Therefore, AI Kosha aims to collect local and indian data so that AI models can be adapted to indian languages and cultural contexts.
In addition, a 'Common Compute Portal' has also been launched to provide small and medium startups and educational institutions access to high-end computing resources, such as GPUs (graphics processing units). This will give startups that cannot afford these expensive resources equal access to resources to build AI models and tools.
