For the first time in the history of Britain's foreign intelligence agency MI6, a woman has been made the chief. British PM Keir Starmer has announced the name of Blaise Metreveli for this. After spending nearly two and a half decades in the UK intelligence agency, Blaise Metreveli will now take over this position at the end of this year. She will replace Reserj Moore. Reserj has been leading the agency since 2020.
PM Starmer called this appointment historic
Blaise Metreveli joined the Secret Intelligence service in 1999. Currently she is the director General of the technology and Innovation Department. Calling this appointment historic, PM Starmer said that her appointment has come at a time when britain is facing threats on a large scale. He said that Metreveli will continue to do all the necessary work to protect the UK.
Blaise Metreveli will face this challenge
After Metreveli's appointment, his biggest challenges are said to be russia, china and Iran. british intelligence agencies have accused russia of running a campaign of sabotage across europe to prevent other countries from supporting ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression. Researcher Moore said last year that iran was behind 20 plots to kill, kidnap or target political opponents in britain in the year 2022.
MI5 (intelligence agency) has had two female chiefs. Stella Rimington in 1992 and Eliza Manningham-Buller from 2002 to 2007 have been the chief of this agency's MI-5.
There is a connection with James Bond films
The name of the department that Metreveli is going to become the chief of has been used in the fictional Q Branch shown in the james bond films, where gadgets and technology are developed for spies. Here gadgets and technology are developed for spies. For britain, Metreveli's department works in a similar way as it has been shown in james bond films. Britain's PM Keir Starmer is currently in canada to attend the G-7 summit.
