The international Agency for Research on cancer (IARC), a part of the World health Organization (WHO), has issued a serious warning regarding the global increase in cancer cases. Their research indicates that by the year 2022, there were already 20 million registered cases of cancer worldwide. Alarming predictions suggest that an additional 35 million people are at risk of contracting cancer by the year 2050.
The IARC warns that there will be a 77 percent increase in new cancer cases by 2050 compared to the numbers recorded in 2022. Several factors, including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, obesity, and air pollution, are identified as the main contributors to the rising cancer cases. The organization highlights that these increasing cancer rates will have profound implications on population growth and aging.
Of particular concern is the impact on developed countries, where there is a projected risk of an additional 4.8 million cases compared to 2022. Additionally, countries with low and average human development indices may experience a 99 percent increase in cancer cases. The IARC warns that deaths from cancer in these countries could double by the year 2050 if effective measures are not implemented to address the contributing factors and improve cancer prevention and treatment strategies.
