After DDA's action in Delhi's Jailerwala Bagh and Wazirpur, Rahul gandhi met the victims, where he also asked questions to the people and talked about many things.
Rahul gandhi Visited ashok Vihar
Congress leader Rahul gandhi on friday (July 25, 2025) visited Jailerwala Bagh and Wazirpur area in ashok Vihar, delhi, where he met the slum dwellers. He directly met the people affected by the slum demolition by the DDA and listened to their problems. During this, Rahul gandhi asked a question, "How many acres is this area spread over?" When a person replied, "100 acres," he smiled and said, "Brother, I have walked on foot on 100 acres." This emotional reaction garnered applause from the audience, but at the same time, many users termed it as political drama on social media. The video clip was shared by the congress on its X (former Twitter) account and wrote that Rahul gandhi met the affected families and shared their pain. But many social media users questioned this initiative and held the congress government responsible for such cases.
The delhi Development Authority (DDA) had taken action to remove encroachment in Jailerwala Bagh and Wazirpur area as per the order of the supreme Court. During this, about 300 slums were demolished. According to DDA officials, this land was illegally occupied, and despite notices, many people did not vacate the land. Encroachment near the railway track also came to light. However, some slum dwellers claim that they have all the valid documents (Aadhaar, Voter ID, etc.) and they have been living there for years. Many families have also obtained stay orders from the court, which have stopped the demolition of some constructions.
The reality of DDA's rehabilitation plan is that there is a slum.
Under the rehabilitation plan, DDA has built 1675 EWS flats named 'Swabhimaan Apartment' in ashok Vihar Phase-2. The area of each flat is 400 square feet, and the cost is ₹25 lakh. Eligible slum dwellers are being given this flat for just Rs 1.42 lakh, and ₹30,000 will have to be deposited as maintenance fee for five years. So far, 1078 people have got flats, but 567 people have been declared 'ineligible'. They have been given an opportunity to appeal, but many residents allege that the process is not transparent and discrimination is being done in rehabilitation.
