James Wan has stated that the Crooked Man sequel film for The Conjuring has been abandoned after more than five years in development. The Conjuring 2's The Conjuring 2 introduces the creature as one of several that the demon Valak employed to afflict Ed and Lorraine Warren and the Hodgson family. The following year, it was reported that development on a Crooked Man spinoff film was underway, with Wan penning a plot proposal and Mike Van Waes hired to write the script. However, whatever advancement the two may have made appears to be falling by the wayside.

James Wan recently shared many behind-the-scenes photos from The Conjuring 2 on his Instagram, offering fans fresh looks at Javier Botet's The Crooked Man character. Wan acknowledged the actor's contribution to the movie and his role in helping to build the horrific entity, but he also revealed that the character's spinoff film for The Conjuring has been cancelled while hinting that the character might return in the future.

Despite the lack of significant updates during The Crooked Man's production, there was some expectation for the The Conjuring spinoff because of the story's creation by Wan and the horror veteran's description of it as a "dark fairytale." Wan, New Line cinema, and producer Peter Safran instead moved on with The Nun and Annabelle sequels, which diminished interest in the movie over time as it made little headway. Since The Nun 2 finally started moving forward earlier this year with Taissa Farmiga, Bonnie Aarons, and Jonas Bloquet all returning and Storm Reid being cast as the new lead for the picture, The Crooked Man now marks the first project in The Conjuring Universe to be formally cancelled.
