It may be too late for Lily james to reprise her role as Lady Rose Aldridge in a sequel after Downton Abbey: A New Era. The life of the Crawley family and their workers alter dramatically in Downton Abbey: A New Era. While Lady Mary Talbot (Michelle Dockery) supervises a film shoot at Downton Abbey, Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) leads a group of the family to the French Riviera to find out why his mother, Lady Violet the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith), was given a villa. Downton Abbey is poised to enter the 1930s by the end of A New Era, having lost Lady Violet but acquiring another new family member.

Lily james joined Downton Abbey at the conclusion of season three and rose through the ranks to become a main cast member in seasons four and five. After Jessica Brown-Findlay elected to leave Downton Abbey and her character was spectacularly murdered off, James' lively and rebellious Lady Rose MacClare, a cousin of Lord Grantham, was essentially the replacement for Lady Sybil. Rose was a bit of a troublemaker at first, making controversial choices in her romantic partners, such as Jack Ross (Gary Carr), an African-American jazz singer Rose almost ran off with. Rose chose to marry Atticus Aldridge (Matt Barber), a Jewish financier from Russia's Aldridge family.
