According to Interior minister Gerald Darmanin, one person was killed and two others were injured when a man attacked tourists in downtown paris near the eiffel tower on Saturday. Darmanin informed reporters that police used a Taser shock gun to rapidly arrest the 26-year-old French national. The suspect was sentenced to four years in jail in 2016 for preparing another assault and was on the French security services' watch list, according to the interior minister, and was also known to have psychological difficulties.

Around 1900 GMT, the guy assaulted a tourist couple with a knife on the Quai de Grenelle, just a few steps from the eiffel tower, killing a German national. He was then pursued by police and used a hammer to strike two additional persons before being apprehended. Darmanin claimed the suspect yelled "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) and informed police he was unhappy because "so many Muslims are dying in afghanistan and Palestine" and was also concerned over the Gaza situation.

The probe has been handed over to the anti-terrorism prosecutor's office. The attack in central paris on saturday night came fewer than eight months before the French city hosts the Olympic Games, raising concerns about security at the worldwide athletic event. paris is planning an enormous opening celebration on the Seine River, which might bring up to 600,000 spectators.
