Following the pahalgam terror attack, a parliamentary committee has asked two government ministries to provide information regarding planned steps against social media platforms and influencers who are allegedly acting against the interests of the country.
 
According to reports, the Standing Committee on Communications and Information technology, which bjp mp Nishikant Dubey chairs, voiced worries about the potential for some social media platforms to instigate violence.
 
The Ministries of Electronics and Information technology and Information and Broadcasting have been contacted by the committee.  Following the IT Act 2000 and the Information technology Intermediary Guidelines and wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>digital media Ethics Code Rules, 2021, they have requested information on the actions that are being considered. The secretaries of the ministries have been directed to submit this data by May 8.


Social media Platforms Under Scrutiny
Several social media accounts were suspended after the pahalgam event for allegedly sharing content that was detrimental to national security.  At least 26 civilians, mostly tourists, were slain by terrorists in pahalgam on april 22.  India has blamed Pakistani-affiliated terrorist organizations for this incident.
 
Panelist Saket Gokhale, a member of the Trinamool Congress, said he had not heard anything about the matter raised in the memo.  He emphasized that the chairperson cannot make statements without committee permission following legislative procedures.  


Committee's Internal Dispute
To be clear, the parliament IT Committee has not stated this, as Gokhale noted when discussing X.  As a member, I haven't signed anything stating this or gotten any correspondence.  He emphasized that without committee approval, a chairman cannot send letters.
 
Parliamentary committees, he added, are holy and ought not to be utilized for partisan ends.  This reveals internal conflicts within the committee on how to handle remarks and communications.
