The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the mumbai Police to register a case against actor ranbir kapoor, the makers of the web series “The Bads of Bollywood”**, and Netflix.
The action comes following allegations that the series promoted e-cigarette use, violating the Prohibition of Electronic cigarettes Act, 2019.
Complaint Highlights Scene Featuring E-Cigarette
Complainant Vinay Joshi pointed out that a scene in the series depicts ranbir kapoor smoking an e-cigarette.
The complaint noted that the scene lacks statutory warnings or disclaimers mandated by law.
Joshi alleged that the streaming of such content misleads young viewers and encourages the use of banned substances.
The complaint emphasizes that visual portrayal of e-cigarettes on a popular platform could normalize their use, especially among impressionable audiences.
Public health and Legal Concerns
The complainant expressed concerns over the potential public health risks linked to such depictions.
The complaint also mentioned that such portrayals may:
Encourage illegal activities related to e-cigarettes.
Show disrespect for law enforcement.
Impact morality and social behavior among youth.
It urged strict legal action against all individuals involved in creating or distributing the content.
NHRC Seeks Immediate Action
The NHRC has issued notices to the Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, urging measures to prevent content that may influence the younger generation negatively.
The commission has also asked the mumbai Police Commissioner to:
Investigate e-cigarette manufacturers and importers linked to the series.
Submit a detailed action report within two weeks.
