If a Sri Lankan refugee shares his story about how their lives were hard in their war-struck country and how they ran for their lives seeking refuge in other countries the first thing any normal human could is either empathize or sympathize. If a victim who has undergone a traumatic experience shares his/her story to be the least I could possibly do is either sympathize or empathize.
 

Dhanush who is a gangster and has killed many as per the claims he makes and how he's been shown starts to imagine and feel the traumatic experience by seeing an aircraft flying over him during a conversation. He himself would be telling the character that he would just feel pity if he hears stories of such things and move on with life. 


So if a character has to change he must have had a cathartic experience and the director should have shown us to make us convinced that he's changing and understood their pain. director karthik Subbaraj made a complete mockery here just by showing glimpses and flashes of the people crying for help and wanted us to think that Suruli has changed.
