The Department of Justice filed additional criminal charges against US President Joe Biden's son, Hunter, on Thursday, accusing him of neglecting to pay $1.4 million in taxes despite living a luxury lifestyle. According to an indictment issued in U.S. district Court in Central California, Biden was charged with three felonies and six misdemeanor tax offenses.

If convicted on the allegations, he faces up to 17 years in jail. The investigation into Biden is still underway, according to the Justice Department.

"The Defendant engaged in a four-year scheme to avoid paying at all costs."

"He owed at least $1.4 million in self-assessed federal taxes for tax years 2016 through 2019," according to the indictment.

It went on to say that Biden "spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills."

A representative for Special Counsel David Weiss and a lawyer for Hunter Biden did not respond to demands for comment right away.

In the first criminal prosecution of a sitting U.S. president's kid, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty in october to allegations that he lied about his drug usage when purchasing a weapon.

Weiss filed the charges against Hunter Biden after an earlier suggested plea agreement fell apart during a judge's questioning. Weiss is still looking into whether the younger Biden may be prosecuted with tax evasion.

According to CNN, the special counsel investigating Hunter has used a grand jury in Los Angeles to collect records and probable testimony from various witnesses as part of the federal investigation into Hunter Biden's business transactions.
