For the second consecutive year, hyderabad ranked highly among the cities and towns from all around the world that took part in the four-day City Nature Challenge-2024, which took place from april 26 to 29.
 
Hyderabad began taking part in the competition in 2023. hyderabad ranked #1 in the nation, with Nanakmatta, Uttarakhand, coming in second. With over 670 cities and towns taking part in the yearly worldwide event, hyderabad ranked 13th overall and second in Asia behind Hong Kong. The top three cities in the world were San Antonio, La Paz, Bolivia, and Monterrey, Mexico.
 

Over the course of the four-day event, 2,092 species—both flora and fauna—have been examined by 527 observers. Over the course of four days, these observers have recorded 34,388 observations. In hyderabad, the most often observed plant species were Sacred Fig (135) and neem Tree (262), while the most frequently observed bird species were Red-vented bulbul (206) and Peacock (206).
 
Experienced birdwatcher sriram Reddy told india Herald that there was a noticeable rise in the number of observers from across the globe. According to him, there were 527 participants this year compared to 350 last year. The results show that more people participated, as seen by the 2,092 species that were identified this year compared to 1,900 the year before.
 

Lila Higgins of the Natural history Museum of Los Angeles County, along with Rebecca Johnson and Alison Young from the california Academy of Sciences, launched the City Nature Challenge. At first, only Los Angeles and san francisco could compete. It was later expanded to other regions of the globe. Recording urban biodiversity was one of the City Nature Challenge's objectives.
