The 12 bjp legislators from Maharashtra, who were suspended from the State assembly recently for their alleged misbehaviour, have approached the supreme court on Thursday.

The action against the bjp MLAs was taken after they allegedly "misbehaved" and "abused" with the presiding officer in chair, bhaskar Jadhav in the assembly. Challenging the suspension from assembly,

The MLAs said that the suspension from assembly was an attempt to "bring down" the number of the Opposition and to "suppress" their voice in the house. They filed a petition in the apex court and termed the suspension as "motivated" and "mala fide".

In their petition, the legislators contended in the court that the Presiding officer should have granted an opportunity to to offer their explanation and stated that some of the ruling party MLAs were also present in the speaker's chamber. Citing the period of one year suspension, the legislators further argued it was "highly disproportionate"

They also said that the heated arguments between the opposition and ruling party forms the essence of democracy and such an action against them is only taken to dilute the opposition strength.

The motion to suspend these 12 MLAs was moved by Anil Parab, state Parliamentary Affairs minister and passed by a voice vote.
