Malaria drugs can play an important role in the treatment of cancer. This has been claimed in a new study. A drug called 'hydroxychloroquine' is used for malaria. Cisplatin, a drug used in chemotherapy for head and throat cancer, blocks the drug's obstruction. It also works to counteract the effects of cisplatin tumour death in animal models.

Hydroxychloroquine is an anti-malarial drug that inhibits the function of lysosomal. The research was conducted by scientists at the university of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). The findings of this study have been published in the National Academy of Sciences. For this, the researchers studied the eggs of chickens and rats and came up with the drug.

Chemotherapy Fails - UPMC Hillman cancer Centre's head-throat specialist and senior co-author of the research, Umamaheshwar Duvuri, says that chemotherapy often fails when caring for patients with head and throat cancer. Cisplatin is a very important drug for chemotherapy. However, tumour resistance to cisplatin is a major problem. My lab is interested in understanding the immune system. So we will find better ways to treat these patients.

TMEM16A lowers protein survival rate: Previous research has shown that a protein called TMEM16A is associated with resistance to cisplatin in a patient's tumour. About 30 per cent of this protein is found in head and throat cancer. It has to do with reduced chances of survival.
