Dr. Ishwarprasad Gilada on behalf of Organised Medicine Academic Guild (OMAG) has sought clarification from the ICMR on a statement made by health ministry that no deaths happened due to oxygen scarcity during the second wave in India.

Dr. Gilada is the Secretary-General of OMAG, a federation of 15 professional associations of senior doctors in the country with around 2,50,000 consultants. He is the first among the infectious diseases experts who raised voice against aids in india in 1985. Gilada is also the President of aids Society of india and represents Asai and the Pacific in Governing Council of international aids Society.

Gilada representing OMAG said that though thousands of people have died due unavailability of oxygen and those deaths are not reported yet. The reason is that ICMR guideline prevents from reporting death during the pandemic as it says respiratory failure or respiratory arrest of asphyxia cannot be mentioned as cause of death.

During an interview, Gilada said the statement of Ministry of State for health Dr. Bharti Pawar, that no deaths happened due to oxygen shortage in the country during the second wave, has shocked the medical fraternity as it is far from reality. He said people died on roads, in ambulances and even in hospitals due to scarcity of oxygen.

The medical expert slammed the minister and said the statement is right as no death was reported due oxygen shortage because the death recording norms do not allow hospitals and doctors to do so.
