Days before its premiere, alia Bhatt's upcoming film Gangubai Kathiawadi found itself in legal trouble. The relatives of the real-life Gangubai said that director Sanjay Leela Bhansali portrayed the character in a negative light. Babu Raoji Shah, Gangubai's alleged adoptive son, and her granddaughter Bharti are dissatisfied with the way Gangubai's character was shown in the cinematic trailer.

In fact, they've been resisting the movie since 2020. Last year, they also filed a suit in a mumbai court. In connection with this, the court has summoned Bhansali and alia Bhatt. The bombay high court later refused to stay the film's release. It also granted an injunction against the producers' criminal defamation cases. Meanwhile, Babu Raoji said in a recent interview with Aaj Tak that his mother is portrayed as a stripper in the movie. He remarked, "People are suddenly saying strange things about her."

According to the Gangubai family's lawyer, Narendra, the family has been relocating since the film's announcement in 2020. He claims that Gangubai's family is constantly being asked if she was a prostitute in real life by relatives and others. He went on to say that the movie had a negative impact on the family's mental health. Bharti Gangubai, Gangubai's granddaughter, claimed that the film's producers defamed her family for financial gain. She said that the producers did not get permission from the family before launching the idea. She went on to say that her grandma worked for the poor's betterment, but that the producers turned her into a prostitute.
