It's also an opportunity to honor firefighters who have given their lives in the service of their communities. Date and background of international Firefighters' Day

Every year on May 4, international Firefighters' Day is commemorated; this year, it falls on a Saturday. Members of the Geelong West fire Brigade responded to a plea for assistance on december 2, 1998, from firefighters fighting a wildfire in Linton, Victoria, Australia. A sudden change in wind direction brought on by a cold front caused the fire vehicle to get engulfed in flames as it was filling its water tank. Five Geelong West firemen tragically lost their life as a result of this incident: Garry Vredeveldt, christopher Evans, Stuart Davidson, Jason Thomas, and Matthew Armstrong. international Firefighters' Day was eventually created as a result of this horrific incident.
