Alice (Kendrick) appears to have it all: a stable job, her two best friends to chat with at wine bars, and Simon, her hot and attentive lover (Charlie Carrick). However, it quickly becomes apparent that there is more to the narrative as a result of Alice's propensity to obsessively tear out her hair and the way she meticulously plans out what she would say to Simon. Alice's carefully crafted façade of a flawless relationship begins to come apart when her friends Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn) and Sophie (Wunmi Mosaku) join her on a weeklong ladies' getaway to a beach house. Soon, it will be up to Tess and Sophie to save Alice from a predicament she refuses to admit.

As Alice, darling demonstrates, violent relationships don't often result in obvious wounds. The plot doesn't reveal itself right away; Francis instead opts to reveal the horrors of Alice and Simon's relationship over time. The indications appear when Alice is by herself, thus Kendrick must use little language and action to envelop the viewer in Alice's inner world. She does it incredibly well, and before long, the viewer is rooting for Alice and anticipating the moment when she manages to escape Simon's control. A movie that highlights emotional toxicity has much to offer. Few viewers could identify Simon's methods as abuse, and Alice, darling handles the subject with the necessary delicacy.

But without a doubt, Kendrick's performance is Alice, Darling's high point. Even though she does a good job of playing off the other cast members, most of the actor's strongest performances occur when Alice is by alone. With astonishing deftness, Kendrick captures Alice's sensitive and apprehensive anxiety, and the audience can really sense how special it is when Alice appears to let loose and reclaim her former self. Carrick portrays the infamous Simon in a way that causes intense uneasiness by showing his deft manipulations. To his credit, he also refrains from turning his portrayal of a verbally abusive partner into an outrageous caricature.

After about an hour and a half, the story of Alice, darling comes to an end. Although this leaves the fate of the film's title character unclear, Nighy gives viewers a glimpse of what will happen to her in the future. In a way, the unpredictability of Alice's next steps is just as potent as everything that came before it. With Kendrick's heartbreaking performance at its centre, Alice, darling is a sensitive look at a delicate issue, with the exception of some awkwardness with the missing girl subplot.
